San Antonio Billion Dollar Budget Crisis

The City of San Antonio is facing a budget crisis unless spending cuts are made. The city’s numbers show that, on September 30, if it continues with current spending, it will be $2.5 million over budget this fiscal year.

Things will get worse if the reckless liberal spending is not stopped. Projections show the city’s deficit will be $31 million by 2026, which could balloon to $148 million in 2027.

Typical of city bureaucrats who want bigger government, María Villagómez, Deputy City Manager, and Justina Tate, Director, Management and Budget, blame lower property tax and sales tax revenues. Since less money is coming into the city’s pockets, but with more spending, like flights for women who want abortions and an unnecessary Pre-K program, the city’s debt will grow to a $31 million deficit in fiscal year 2026, and a projected $148 million deficit in fiscal year 2027.

The new city council and mayor will tackle this at a goal-setting session on June 27. Liberal members of the city leaders want to continue expanding social services for the sake of “equity” and social justice. They want to cut police services and redistribute more funding to lower-income minority districts instead of giving all 10 city council districts an equal share.

The next mayor and city council must make tough budget-cutting decisions. All districts should receive equal funding, and spending must be cut. San Antonio needs a smaller government that only funds public safety, water, sewer, sidewalks, streets, and programs that serve all citizens, not just some.
